Teaching Your Brittany To Sit

Teach Your Brittany to Sit

Are you attempting to teach your Brittany to sit? The talent of sitting up is effortlessly taught to compact dogs, yet much larger doggies are another story. It’s hard for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Brittany to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting is one of the most basic tricks that should be taught to your Brittany and lays the groundwork for several other skills. To train a Brittany to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place your Brittany on her backside in a corner, so that she is unable to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Brittany to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Stop her from tilting forward by keeping your hand beneath her chin and using the other hand dangle the snack above her nose. Keep saying clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not force her to sit for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson frequently and reward her often with a lot of approval and treats.

Teach Your Brittany to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

Throughout the initial lesson your Brittany will call for a surprising amount of help from you to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gains better control of the balancing muscles and is aware of what you want, she will rely less and less on your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give your Brittany less support til you’ll basically have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be ready to stop her falling forward; later on you can most likely remove this hand entirely and simply dangle the treat just above the level of your Brittany’s face.

Teach Your Brittany To Sit: Remove the Assistance Progressively

After frequent practice she will stay seated for a good while after you command her. The next step is she should be set up against a wall, so as to give her assistance for her back. Once she has learned this and can hold her position effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less aid. Eventually she will master how to maintain her balance and sit in the absence of something to rest on.

Teach Your Brittany to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche by means of persistent repetition. Last is the final training to teach your Brittany to sit up whenever she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will merely have to get her out into the room, reveal to her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.

The only criteria for perfection is to rehearse with her multiple times a day until she sits when commanded to and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only once she has obeyed the command.

Teach Your Brittany Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Brittany many other skills. She now can be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

In instructing a Brittany to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. Only after she becomes familiar with that you could put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to the other clothing.

Take joy in "teaching your Brittany the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
