Teach Your Blue Paul Terrier to Sit

Teach Your Blue Paul Terrier to Sit: Readiness

Sitting is one of the most basic skills that should be taught to your Blue Paul Terrier and is the foundation for various other tricks. To train a Blue Paul Terrier to sit up, prep some treats as a perk, and place your Blue Paul Terrier on her backside in a corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Blue Paul Terrier to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Stop her from tilting to the front by holding 1 hand beneath her chin and using your second hand hold her reward above her nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at any one time, but repeat the instruction frequently and reward her often with lots of recognition and treats.

Teach Your Blue Paul Terrier to Sit: Help Her Balance

During her first lesson your Blue Paul Terrier will call for quite a bit of support from your hand to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of the muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she will rely less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less support til you will only have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you will be able to remove the hand and merely dangle the treat right above the level of her head.

After constant training she will sit up for a long time after you make her. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. When she has understood this and can hold her posture effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other items that give her less and less support. At some point she will grasp how to sustain her balance and sit without anything to lean against.

During the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious with the assistance of constant repetition. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When instructing a Blue Paul Terrier to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes at the same time. Try her at first with a cap. Only after she gets familiar with that you could put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to more garments.
