Are you aiming to teach your Armant to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to petite dogs, however much larger pet dogs are a different story. It’s hard for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Armant to Sit: Foundation
Sitting up is one of the most basic skills that you should teach to your Armant and is the foundation for innumerable other techniques. In order to train a Armant to sit up, prep some snacks as a reward, and set your Armant on her backside in a corner, so she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Armant to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase
Protect her from tilting to the front by holding 1 hand beneath her chin and with your second hand hold the treat above your Armant’s face. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not make her sit for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson often and reward her often with loads of kudos and snacks.
Teach Your Armant to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout the very first lesson she will require a lot of assistance from your hand to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of the balancing muscles and realises what you want, she will rely less upon your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help up until you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be available to stop her falling forward; later you can probably take away this hand altogether and simply hold the snack right above the level of your Armant’s face.
Teach Your Armant To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly
After steady practice she will sit up long after you set her up. Then she should be set up against the wall, so as to give her assistance for her back. Soon after she has understood this and can hold her place easily, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other items that give her less and less help and support. In time she will learn how to sustain her stability and sit without relying on something to rest against.
Teach Your Armant to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche by means of persistent repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Armant to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been properly trained, you will merely have to call her out in the room, display to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the treat while still in place.
The only prerequisite for perfection is to train with her several times a day until she can sit up when told and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your Armant Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Armant many other tricks. She now can learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
While teaching a Armant to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try her at first with just a cap. After she becomes used to that you could put on a jacket and slowly introduce her to more garments.
