Teach Your Cumberland Sheepdog to Jump for AgilityThis post is about teaching the Cumberland Sheepdog to jump for agility. We are often asked, “How many jumps is best to begin with?” You can’t ever have enough solo jumps to learn agility. One suitable starting place is four jumps. This is the absolute fewest quantity of jumps suggested.

Teaching Your Cumberland Sheepdog to jump: Start with 4

You can teach your Cumberland Sheepdog many drills, skills, and exercises with 4 jumps. Four jumps will let you develop on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can setup a “box” with your jumps and work on collection, handling, and 270 degree jumps. You can teach your Cumberland Sheepdog jumping right and left. You could be outside the box and send your Cumberland Sheepdog or you can handle from within the box. Your jumps could be positioned in a horizontal row, so you can practice serpentines and threadles.

Teach a Cumberland Sheepdog 8 Jumps

Go to the next logical step and practice 8 jumps. Now you can position two boxes with one starter jump. You’ve now increased your routines that you can practice with your Cumberland Sheepdog. Your jump grids can be of suggested size and quantity of jumps. You can even position your jumps in a circle with the jump bars normal to the circle or on the circumference of the circle. This pattern also enables you to develop a variety of skills.

Teaching Your Cumberland Sheepdog Double and Triple Jumps

The next step is a double jump and a triple jump. You can chain 2 or 3 single jumps together to make your expanded jump, however having double and triple jumps in your course work is especially helpful to work on. We’ve seen many Cumberland Sheepdogs run a flawless course and the last obstacle is a triple and the Cumberland Sheepdog is not ready to do it, and bang, down goes the bar.
