Often we are asked, “What number of jumps is best to begin with?” You can’t ever have too many solo jumps to teach agility. A suitable starting point is 4 jumps. This is the fewest quantity of jumps that we suggest.

Teaching a English Springer Spaniel to jump: Start with Four

You can teach your English Springer Spaniel a plethora of exercises, drills, and skills with 4 jumps. Four jumps will let you work on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can position a “box” with your jumps and practice collection, handling, and 270 degree jumps. You can teach your English Springer Spaniel jumping left and right. You can be out of the box and send your English Springer Spaniel or you can handle from within the box. Your jumps could be staged in a horizontal line, so you could practice threadles and serpentines.

Teach a English Springer Spaniel 8 Jumps

Take the next logical step and get eight jumps. Now you can setup 2 boxes with 1 starter jump. Now you’ve increased your drills that you can try with your English Springer Spaniel. Your jump grids can be of typical size and quantity of jumps. You can also position the jumps in a circle with the jump bars perpendicular to the circle or on the circumference of the circle. This setup also enables you to train a variety of drills.

Teaching the English Springer Spaniel Double and Triple Jumps

Your next step is a double jump and a triple jump. You can position 2 or 3 single jumps together to make your expanded jump, however having double and triple jumps in your course work is really helpful to practice. We’ve seen several English Springer Spaniels run a perfect course and the last obstacle is a triple and the English Springer Spaniel is not equipped to do it, and bang, down comes the bar.
