Often we are asked, “How many jumps should I start with?” You can never have enough single jumps to teach agility. One good starting point is four jumps. This is the fewest quantity of jumps that we recommend.

How to Teach a Toy Manchester Terrier to jump: Begin with 4

You can teach your Toy Manchester Terrier a multitude of exercises, drills, and skills with four jumps. Four jumps will let you work on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can practice on a “box” with your jumps and work on handling, collection, and 270 degree jumps. You can teach your Toy Manchester Terrier jumping right and left. You could be outside the box and send your Toy Manchester Terrier or you can handle from the inside of the box. Your jumps could be positioned in a lateral line, so that you could practice serpentines and threadles.

Teach Your Toy Manchester Terrier Eight Jumps

Take the next logical step and get 8 jumps. Now you can position 2 boxes with one introductory jump. You’ve now increased your drills that you can work on with your Toy Manchester Terrier. Your jump grids can be of recommended size and quantity of jumps. You can even position the jumps in a circle with the jump bars normal to the circle or on the perimeter of the circle. This pattern also enables you to develop a variety of drills.

Teach Your Toy Manchester Terrier Double and Triple Jumps

The next step is a double jump and a triple jump. You could set two or 3 single jumps together to make your expanded jump, but having double and triple jumps in your course work is really helpful to practice. We’ve seen several Toy Manchester Terriers run a flawless course and the final obstacle is a triple and the Toy Manchester Terrier is not prepared for it, and bang, down comes the bar.
