Eventually, you are going to be asked: “Mommy, can we get that Dalmatian puppy?”
Instead of avoiding the question, parents are advised to decide whether their family is prepared for a dog, and even moreso a Dalmatian, says Sharon Bergen, SVP of education and training for Knowledge Learning Corporation, this country’s leading provider of early childhood education.
While asking yourself “should you get the Dalmatian” Bergen advises that parents weigh the benefits and drawbacks of adding the Dalmatian to the family before agreeing to a child’s request. “The Dalmatian can teach our children about responsibility and be a great addition to your household-or it can become a hassle,” she said. Bergen suggests families consider the following before deciding:
Things to Ask Before Answering Should You Get The Dalmatian Puppy
Who will be the one to care for the Dalmatian? Parents and kids should come to an agreement in advance who will be responsible for walking feeding, bathing and cleaning up after the Dalmatian.
Do you have room for the Dalmatian, or does your landlord allow dogs? Folks who live in townhouses or apartments may be better suited to a bird, a fish, or cat, instead of the Dalmatian. Check the library or Internet to find out more about Dalmatians to decide if another animal may be more suitable for your family.
Raising the Dalmatian is a big committment and not cheap. The family should realize that they will be expected to give up current activities to properly care for the Dalmatian. If the requirement turns out to be too much of a committment, you should consider delaying until the child is old enough to help raise the Dalmatian.
Conclusion: Should You Get A Dalmatian
Bergen advises the entire household meet the Dalmatian prior to deciding to take it home. Rearing the Dalmatian is a huge commitment, so think carefully before adopting a furry new family member.
