Teach Your Sussex Spaniel to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting up is one of the most basic skills that you should teach to your Sussex Spaniel and forms the groundwork for many other skills. In order to train a Sussex Spaniel to sit up, put together some snacks as a reward, and set the Sussex Spaniel on her butt in a corner, to ensure that she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Sussex Spaniel to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words
Protect her from pitching towards you by sticking 1 hand under her chin and with your other hand hold the snack above your Sussex Spaniel’s face. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit for too long at one time, however repeat the lesson often and reward her regularly with lots of cheers and snacks.
Teach Your Sussex Spaniel to Sit: Help Her Balance
During the 1st lesson your Sussex Spaniel will call for significant assistance from you to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of her muscles and learns what you want her to do, she will depend less on your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help till you’ll only have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her falling forward; later you can most likely remove the hand completely and simply hold the reward right above the level of her head.

Only after she has gotten the knack of this and can hold her place effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less assistance. Eventually she will figure out how to sustain her stability and sit without having anything to lean against.

During all this training the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious with the assistance of frequent repetition. Last here's the final lesson to teach your Sussex Spaniel to sit up right after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been properly taught, you will merely have to summon her out into the room, display to her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then you'll just give her the treat while still in position.
The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to practice with your Sussex Spaniel multiple times daily until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has complied with the command.

You have now the method for teaching your Sussex Spaniel many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
In teaching a Sussex Spaniel to submit to being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try her at first with a cap. Soon after she becomes used to that you could put on a jacket and progressively introduce her to the other clothes.
