How To Train Your Rottweiler To Sit

Teach Your Rottweiler to Sit

Are you struggling to teach your Rottweiler to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to compact dogs, though larger pooches are another story. It’s tricky for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Rottweiler to Sit: Foundation

Sitting is one of the 1st tricks that you should teach to your Rottweiler and forms the foundation for numerous other skills. In order to train a Rottweiler to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and put your Rottweiler on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Rottweiler to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase

Protect her from pitching forward by maintaining 1 hand on her chin and using your second hand dangle the treat above the Rottweiler’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the training routinely and reward her regularly with lots of adoration and snacks.

Teach Your Rottweiler to Sit: Help Her Balance

During the initial lesson she will require a lot of assistance from your hand to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains more control of the stabilizing muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she will rely less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give your Rottweiler less help til you’ll only have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to prevent her from falling forward; in the future you can easily remove your hand altogether and merely dangle the snack just above the height of your Rottweiler’s face.

Teach Your Rottweiler To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually Over Time

With frequent practice she will sit up for a good while after you command her. The next step is she should be set against the wall, so as to offer her help for her back only. Only after she has soaked up this and can hold her posture easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less assistance. Ultimately she will grasp how to keep her stability and sit without relying on anything to lean against.

Teach Your Rottweiler to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious through constant repetition. Lastly here's the final training to teach your Rottweiler to sit up whenever she hears the words. Chances are, if she has been properly instructed, you will just have to call her out in the room, reveal to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you give her the snack while still in position.

The only prerequisite for perfection is to practice with her several times daily until she sits up on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has complied with the command.

Teach Your Rottweiler Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Rottweiler many other tricks. She now can learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

While training a Rottweiler to submit to being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many things at one time. Try at first with a hat. After she gets used to that you can put on a coat and slowly introduce her to more garments.

Take joy in "teaching your Rottweiler the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
