Teach Your Moscow Water Dog to Sit: Foundation

Sitting up is one of the 1st skills that should be taught to your Moscow Water Dog and is the ground work for myriad other tricks. To train a Moscow Water Dog to sit up, prep some snacks as a perk, and put the Moscow Water Dog on her rump in the corner, so that she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Moscow Water Dog to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Protect her from tilting forward by holding 1 hand underneath her chin and with the other hand hold the snack above her nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not force her to sit for too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson frequently and reward her frequently with lots of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Moscow Water Dog to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

In her first lesson she will need a lot of help and support from you to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of her stabilizing muscles and grasps what you want her to do, she will depend less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance up until you will merely have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be available to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you can probably remove your hand and just simply dangle the snack just above the level of your Moscow Water Dog’s face.

After constant practice your Moscow Water Dog will stay seated long after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her help for her back only. Once she has learned this and can maintain her position effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, pillows or other objects that provide her less and less support. In time she will master how to maintain her stability and sit up without anything to rest against.

During all this training the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche by regular repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Moscow Water Dog to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been carefully trained, you will simply have to call her out into the room, display a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.

The only necessity for flawlessness is to rehearse with her several times a day until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has complied with the direction.

Teach Your Moscow Water Dog Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Moscow Water Dog many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

When teaching a Moscow Water Dog to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try her at first with a cap. After she becomes accustomed to that you could put on a jacket and over time introduce her to more clothing.
