Are you working to teach your Kuvasz to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to smaller dogs, yet much bigger dogs are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Kuvasz to Sit: Readiness
Sitting is one of the first skills that you should teach to a Kuvasz and forms the foundation for quite a few other tricks. To train a Kuvasz to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and put the Kuvasz on her haunches in a corner, so that she is unable to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Kuvasz to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Protect her from pitching forward by keeping one hand underneath her chin and using the other hand dangle her treat above her nose. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit for too long at one time, but do repeat the lesson regularly and reward her regularly with a lot of cheers and treats.
Teach Your Kuvasz to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout the first lesson your Kuvasz will call for significant help and support from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gets better control of her stabilizing muscles and starts to learn what you want, she will count less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Kuvasz less support till you’ll basically have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her falling forward; later on you can easily take away the hand entirely and just simply hold the treat just over the level of your Kuvasz’s face.
Teach Your Kuvasz To Sit: Remove the Assistance Eventually
After frequent training she will sit up for a good while after you tell her to. Then she should be set against your wall, so as to offer her help for her back. Soon after she has understood this and can keep her position easily, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less assistance. In the end she will understand how to keep her balance and sit without relying on anything to rest against.
Teach Your Kuvasz to Sit: Putting It All Together
In the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche by regular repetition. Last here's the final training to teach your Kuvasz to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully instructed, you will simply have to call her out into the room, show to her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will do so. Then give her the reward while still in place.
The only necessity for perfection is to rehearse with her several times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only after she has followed the direction.
Teach Your Kuvasz Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Kuvasz many other skills. She now can learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
While training a Kuvasz to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes adjusted to that you could put on a coat and slowly and gradually introduce her to the other clothes.
