How To Train Your Kerry Beagle To Sit

Teach Your Kerry Beagle to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Kerry Beagle to sit? The skill of sitting up is quickly taught to pocket-sized dogs, but much bigger doggies are another story. It’s hard for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Kerry Beagle to Sit: Planning

Sitting is one of the initial skills that you should teach to a Kerry Beagle and is the groundwork for numerous other tricks. To train a Kerry Beagle to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and set your Kerry Beagle on her rump in the corner, to make sure that she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Kerry Beagle to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Stop her from pitching towards you by keeping one hand beneath her chin and using the second hand dangle her reward above your Kerry Beagle’s face. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up for too long at any one time, but repeat the training often and reward her often with a lot of approval and treats.

Teach Your Kerry Beagle to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

In the 1st lesson she will demand a surprising amount of assistance from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of her balancing muscles and knows what you want, she will depend less and less on your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help until you’ll merely have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; eventually you may take away your hand completely and merely suspend the reward right over the height of your Kerry Beagle’s face.

Teach Your Kerry Beagle To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually

After consistent practice your Kerry Beagle will stay seated for a long time after you tell her to. Next she should be set against your wall, so as to give her assistance for her back. Once she has figured out this and can keep her posture easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other objects that give her less and less help. At some point she will master how to maintain her equilibrium and sit up in the absence of anything to lean against.

Teach Your Kerry Beagle to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche by means of frequent repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Kerry Beagle to sit up as soon as she hears the words. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will simply have to get her out in the room, display a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll give her the treat while still in place.

The only requirement for flawlessness is to train with her multiple times daily until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has followed the command.

Teach Your Kerry Beagle Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Kerry Beagle many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

In teaching a Kerry Beagle to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at one time. Try her at first with a cap. Once she becomes adjusted to that you can put on a coat and slowly introduce her to the other clothes.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Kerry Beagle the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
