How To Train Your Irish Terrier To Sit

Teach Your Irish Terrier to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Irish Terrier to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to little dogs, yet larger doggies are another story. It’s hard for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Irish Terrier to Sit: Planning

Sitting up is one of the most basic tricks that should be taught to a Irish Terrier and forms the ground work for many other tricks. In order to train a Irish Terrier to sit up, put together some treats as a reward, and place the Irish Terrier on her rump in the corner, so she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Irish Terrier to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Prevent her from pitching towards you by sticking your hand beneath her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above your Irish Terrier’s face. Keep repeating distinctly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit for too long at one time, but repeat the instruction often and reward her frequently with loads of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Irish Terrier to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her first lesson your Irish Terrier will need significant help and support from you to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of her balancing muscles and figures out what you want, she’ll count less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less assistance up until you will simply have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her from falling forward; later you might remove your hand completely and simply suspend the snack just over the level of her head.

Teach Your Irish Terrier To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time

After consistent practice your Irish Terrier will sit up long after you set her up. Next she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Only after she has gotten the hang of this and can hold her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less support. Ultimately she will get the hang of how to sustain her equilibrium and sit in the absence of anything to rest against.

Teach Your Irish Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all this training the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind through frequent repetition. Lastly here's the final training to teach your Irish Terrier to sit up whenever she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been properly trained, you will just have to get her out in the room, show a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you give her the treat while still in place.

The only prerequisite for excellence is to practice with her several times daily until she will sit on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has complied with the direction.

Teach Your Irish Terrier Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Irish Terrier many other tricks. She now can learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When training a Irish Terrier to tolerate being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many garments at once. Try her at first with a hat. Soon after she becomes used to that you can put on a jacket and slowly and gradually introduce her to more garments.

Delight in "teaching your Irish Terrier the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
