Throughout her 1st lesson she will demand a surprising amount of help from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the balancing muscles and knows what you want her to do, she will rely less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help til you’ll just have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; eventually you can remove the hand completely and just simply hold the reward just over the level of her face.

Teach Your German Rough-Haired Pointer To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually

After steady training your German Rough-Haired Pointer will sit up long after you command her. Then she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. After she has mastered this and can maintain her place effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other objects that provide her less and less support. In time she will learn to keep her balance and sit without anything to lean on.




Teach Your German Rough-Haired Pointer to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche through frequent repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your German Rough-Haired Pointer to sit up right after she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been properly trained, you will just have to get her out in the room, show her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.

The only requirement for excellence is to practice with your German Rough-Haired Pointer several times daily until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has complied with the command.

Teach Your German Rough-Haired Pointer Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your German Rough-Haired Pointer many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

When training a German Rough-Haired Pointer to tolerate being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many garments at once. Try her at first with a hat. Soon after she becomes adjusted to that you could put on a coat and gradually over time introduce her to the other clothing.
