How To Train Your German Longhaired Pointer To Sit

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer to Sit

Are you struggling to teach your German Longhaired Pointer to sit? The talent of sitting up is quickly taught to petite dogs, though larger dogs are another story. It’s tricky for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer to Sit: Preparation

Sitting is one of the most basic techniques that should be taught to a German Longhaired Pointer and provides the groundwork for many other tricks. In order to train a German Longhaired Pointer to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place your German Longhaired Pointer on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Protect her from pitching forward by sticking 1 hand on her chin and with your second hand hold her snack above her face. Keep saying clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson frequently and reward her frequently with a lot of approval and snacks.

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer to Sit: Help Her Balance

During her 1st lesson she will need considerable assistance from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets more control of the muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she’ll count less upon your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help up until you will only have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her falling forward; in the future you will be able to remove your hand completely and simply dangle the snack just above the level of your German Longhaired Pointer’s head.

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time

After steady practice your German Longhaired Pointer will stay seated for a long time after you command her. The next step is she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. Soon after she has taken in this and can hold her posture easily, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less aid. Ultimately she will figure out how to keep her stability and sit up without needing anything to rest against.

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by regular repetition. Now here's the final training to teach your German Longhaired Pointer to sit up immediately after she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been properly trained, you will merely have to summon her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.

The only criteria for excellence is to rehearse with her multiple times a day until she will sit when told and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only once she has adhered to the command.

Teach Your German Longhaired Pointer Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your German Longhaired Pointer many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

In teaching a German Longhaired Pointer to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try her at first with just a cap. Soon after she becomes adjusted to that you can put on a coat and slowly introduce her to more clothes.

Appreciate "teaching your German Longhaired Pointer the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
