Teach Your Galgo Espanol to Sit: Planning
Sitting up is one of the fundamental tricks that should be taught to a Galgo Espanol and provides the foundation for lots of other techniques. In order to train a Galgo Espanol to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and place the Galgo Espanol on her haunches in the corner, so she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Galgo Espanol to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Prevent her from falling forward by holding your hand under her chin and using the other hand dangle the treat above her nose. Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not make her sit too long at any one time, but repeat the training routinely and reward her often with a lot of appreciation and treats.
Teach Your Galgo Espanol to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
In her initial lesson your Galgo Espanol will demand a surprising amount of help and support from your hand to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gains more control of her muscles and learns what you want, she will count less upon your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help until you’ll simply have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her from falling forward; later you can probably withdraw this hand completely and simply hold the reward right over the level of your Galgo Espanol’s head.
Teach Your Galgo Espanol To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually
With frequent practice your Galgo Espanol will sit up for a good while after you command her. Afterward she should be set against your wall, so as to offer her help for her back only. After she has figured out this and can hold her place easily, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less support. Gradually she will grasp how to sustain her equilibrium and sit in the absence of anything to lean on.
Teach Your Galgo Espanol to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all this training the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche by means of regular repetition. Last here's the final training to teach your Galgo Espanol to sit up right after she hears the words. Most likely, if she has been properly trained, you will only have to summon her out into the room, reveal a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you'll give her the reward while still in place.
The only requirement for flawlessness is to practice with your Galgo Espanol multiple times daily until she will sit up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has followed the direction.
Teach Your Galgo Espanol Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Galgo Espanol many other skills. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
In teaching a Galgo Espanol to submit to being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many things simultaneously. Try at first with a hat. Only after she gets used to that you could put on a coat and over time introduce her to the other garments.
