Are you trying to teach your Bracco Italiano to sit? The skill of sitting up is regularly taught to petite dogs, yet bigger pet dogs are another story. It is tricky for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Bracco Italiano to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting is one of the initial tricks that you should teach to your Bracco Italiano and provides the ground work for a number of other skills. In order to train a Bracco Italiano to sit up, organize some treats as a perk, and set your Bracco Italiano on her backside in a corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Bracco Italiano to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase
Keep her from pitching towards you by sticking your hand on her chin and with the other hand hold her snack above the Bracco Italiano’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, however repeat the training routinely and reward her often with lots of praise and snacks.
Teach Your Bracco Italiano to Sit: Help Her Balance
In the first lesson your Bracco Italiano will demand quite a bit of assistance from your hand to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and grasps what you want, she’ll rely less and less on your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help til you’ll only have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be prepared to prevent her falling forward; in the future you can most likely remove this hand and simply dangle the treat right over the level of her head.
Teach Your Bracco Italiano To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time
With consistent training she will sit up for a long time after you set her up. Then she should be set against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back only. After she has mastered this and can hold her place effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less help and support. In the end she will be able to keep her equilibrium and sit up in the absence of anything to rest against.
Teach Your Bracco Italiano to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche by constant repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Bracco Italiano to sit up immediately after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been properly instructed, you will only have to get her out into the room, reveal a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.
The only necessity for excellence is to rehearse with her several times daily until she sits up on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the command.
Teach Your Bracco Italiano Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Bracco Italiano many other skills. She now can be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
In teaching a Bracco Italiano to accept being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many clothes at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. Once she becomes used to that you could put on a coat and eventually introduce her to the other clothes.
