How To Teach Your Sealyham Terrier To Sit

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Sealyham Terrier to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, however much bigger canines are a different story. It’s hard for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier to Sit: Readiness

Sitting up is one of the first skills that should be taught to your Sealyham Terrier and provides the ground work for several other tricks. In order to train a Sealyham Terrier to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and put your Sealyham Terrier on her rump in the corner, to make sure that she will not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Keep her from tilting forward by keeping one hand under her chin and with your second hand dangle the snack above the Sealyham Terrier’s face. Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up too long at one time, however repeat the instruction often and reward her often with a lot of kudos and snacks.

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier to Sit: Help Her Balance

During the beginner lesson she will demand significant assistance from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains better control of the stabilizing muscles and comprehends what you want her to do, she will depend less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less help and support till you’ll only have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be in place to stop her from falling forward; later on you will be able to take away the hand and simply suspend the treat just above the height of your Sealyham Terrier’s face.

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually

After frequent training she will stay seated long after you make her. Then she should be set against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Soon after she has mastered this and can hold her place easily, practice with her against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less assistance. At some point she will learn how to maintain her stability and sit without relying on anything to rest against.

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind through frequent repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Sealyham Terrier to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been properly taught, you will simply have to get her out in the room, show her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she'll do so. Then just give her the treat while still in position.

The only prerequisite for perfection is to practice with your Sealyham Terrier several times a day until she will sit on command and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only once she has followed the command.

Teach Your Sealyham Terrier Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Sealyham Terrier many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

In instructing a Sealyham Terrier to accept being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try at first with just a cap. Once she becomes adjusted to that you could put on a jacket and slowly introduce her to the other clothing.

Enjoy "teaching your Sealyham Terrier the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
