Are you trying to teach your Karelian Bear Dog to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to smaller dogs, but larger pet dogs are another story. It’s tricky for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Karelian Bear Dog to Sit: Preparation
Sitting up is one of the initial tricks that should be taught to your Karelian Bear Dog and forms the ground work for quite a few other tricks. In order to train a Karelian Bear Dog to sit up, organize some snacks as a perk, and put your Karelian Bear Dog on her butt in a corner, so that she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Karelian Bear Dog to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Stop her from pitching to the front by securing your hand underneath her chin and using the other hand dangle the snack above your Karelian Bear Dog’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her often with loads of kudos and treats.
Teach Your Karelian Bear Dog to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
Throughout the initial lesson she will require a surprising amount of help and support from you to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets more control of her muscles and starts to understand what you want her to do, she will depend less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less assistance until you will only have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can take away the hand and merely dangle the reward just above the level of her head.
Teach Your Karelian Bear Dog To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually
With regular training she will sit up well after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set against the wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Immediately after she has gotten the knack of this and can keep her place easily, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other objects that provide her less and less support. In the end she will be trained to preserve her stability and sit without having something to rest on.
Teach Your Karelian Bear Dog to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind with the assistance of persistent repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Karelian Bear Dog to sit up as soon as she hears the words. Most likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will simply have to summon her out into the room, show to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she will do so. Then just give her the treat while still in position.
The only requirement for perfection is to train with her multiple times a day until she can sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only once she has complied with the command.
Teach Your Karelian Bear Dog Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your Karelian Bear Dog many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
While instructing a Karelian Bear Dog to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many items at once. Try her at first with a hat. Only after she gets accustomed to that you could put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to more garments.
