Teach Your Field Spaniel to Sit: Readiness
Sitting is one of the 1st tricks that should be taught to your Field Spaniel and forms the groundwork for countless other techniques. To train a Field Spaniel to sit up, put together some snacks as a reward, and set the Field Spaniel on her butt in a corner, so that she won’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Field Spaniel to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase
Stop her from tilting towards you by sticking your hand beneath her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above her face. Keep repeating distinctly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t make her sit for too long at any one time, but do repeat the training regularly and reward her frequently with a lot of appreciation and snacks.
Teach Your Field Spaniel to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
During her first lesson she will demand quite a bit of assistance from your hand to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gains more control of the balancing muscles and figures out what you want, she’ll rely less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less support up until you will simply have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her from falling forward; eventually you can probably remove this hand altogether and merely suspend the snack just over the level of your Field Spaniel’s face.
Teach Your Field Spaniel To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time
With steady practice your Field Spaniel will sit up for a long time after you make her. The next step is she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Immediately after she has grasped this and can keep her place effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less help. In the end she will get the hang of how to keep her equilibrium and sit up without anything to lean on.
Teach Your Field Spaniel to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche with the assistance of constant repetition. Last here's the final lesson to teach your Field Spaniel to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently taught, you will only have to get her out into the room, display to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you give her the snack while still in place.
The only necessity for perfection is to rehearse with your Field Spaniel multiple times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a treat; give her the rewards only after she has complied with the direction.
Teach Your Field Spaniel Other Tricks
You have now the basis for teaching your Field Spaniel many other skills. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
While training a Field Spaniel to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at the same time. Try her at first with just a cap. Once she becomes familiar with that you could put on a coat and gradually introduce her to more clothes.
