Teach Your Chow Chow to Sit

Are you trying to teach your Chow Chow to sit? The technique of sitting up is effortlessly taught to little dogs, however larger canines are another story. It’s problematic for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your Chow Chow to Sit: Prep

Sitting up is one of the fundamental techniques that you should teach to your Chow Chow and provides the groundwork for countless other skills. In order to train a Chow Chow to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and set your Chow Chow on her rump in a corner, to ensure she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Chow Chow to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Prevent her from tilting forward by maintaining your hand beneath her chin and with your other hand hold the snack above the Chow Chow’s nose. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not make her sit for too long at any one time, but repeat the instruction regularly and reward her regularly with lots of adoration and treats.

Teach Your Chow Chow to Sit: Help Her Balance

During the first lesson she will demand quite a bit of assistance from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gains more control of her balancing muscles and learns what you want her to do, she will rely less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less assistance till you’ll basically have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be in place to prevent her from falling forward; later on you can easily take away the hand altogether and simply hold the treat right above the level of her face.

Teach Your Chow Chow To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually

With frequent practice your Chow Chow will sit up long after you command her. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. When she has gotten the knack of this and can hold her position effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less support. Sooner or later she will figure out how to sustain her stability and sit up without having something to lean on.




Teach Your Chow Chow to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by means of persistent repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Chow Chow to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been carefully instructed, you will only have to summon her out in the room, show to her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in position.

The only necessity for perfection is to train with your Chow Chow multiple times daily until she will sit when told and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the command.

Teach Your Chow Chow Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Chow Chow many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

While teaching a Chow Chow to submit to being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many items at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. Only after she becomes used to that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to the other clothes.
