Teach Your Catalan Sheepdog to Sit: Preparing

Sitting up is one of the very first tricks that you should teach to your Catalan Sheepdog and forms the foundation for a lot of other skills. In order to train a Catalan Sheepdog to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and put your Catalan Sheepdog on her haunches in a corner, to ensure that she won’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Catalan Sheepdog to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Prevent her from pitching towards you by holding 1 hand beneath her chin and using the second hand hold the snack above her nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with lots of cheers and treats.

Teach Your Catalan Sheepdog to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

In the first lesson your Catalan Sheepdog will require a lot of support from your hand to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of the stabilizing muscles and is aware of what you want her to do, she’ll count less upon your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give her less support til you’ll simply have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her from falling forward; later you can remove the hand altogether and just dangle the treat right above the level of her face.

Teach Your Catalan Sheepdog To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time

After regular practice your Catalan Sheepdog will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Once she has gotten the knack of this and can keep her position easily, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that provide her less and less support. Eventually she will be trained to maintain her stability and sit in the absence of something to rest on.

Teach Your Catalan Sheepdog to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by means of constant repetition. Now comes the final lesson to teach your Catalan Sheepdog to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been diligently instructed, you will only have to summon her out in the room, show to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll give her the reward while still in position.

The only condition for excellence is to practice with your Catalan Sheepdog multiple times daily until she will sit up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the direction.
