Basic Basenji Obedience Tips

Training has to be a positive and rewarding situation for both you and the Basenji. If you’re not in the right mood for training, do not even start. Always treat the Basenji for listening to your commands to the letter! A reward is anything that your Basenji desires and is happy to earn. Food is the usual prize but other treats could be verbal praise and playthings. Many brief sessions are much more effective than 1 long one. Training mustn’t involve any degrading components or punishment. There should be no shouting, no hitting or smacking, no leash yanking on training chains or collars, and absolutely no electricity! Every single training opportunity needs to be pleasant and reinforcing with praise for jobs well done.

Training Basenjis with head collars

Yanking the leash is one of the few negative tasks of bringing up a new Basenji puppy. Utilizing a head collar for Basenji training has become standard during the last few years. Training with a head collar does have some advantages over the standard training collar. Though it’s quite easy to use, it’s important that head collars are fit correctly and your Basenji systematically introduced to the collar. Head collars are pretty much more simple to use than a regular training collar. Head collars are very effective when guiding Basenjis in difficult situations.
