Basic English Shepherd Obedience Tips

Training must be a positive and enjoyable experience for both you and your English Shepherd. If you are not in the right mood for training, do not even think of beginning. Always treat the English Shepherd for obeying your commands to the letter! A treat is anything that your English Shepherd wants and is willing to earn. Edible treats are an obvious reward but other rewards could be oral praise and toys. Many brief training sessions are typically better than 1 long one. Training should not involve any degrading comments or consequences. There should be no yelling, no smacking or hitting, no leash jerking on choke chains or collars, and absolutely no electric fences! Each training opportunity needs to be enjoyed and positive with rewards for each job well done.

Training English Shepherds with head collars

Dragging the lead is one of the few unpleasant requirements of training a new English Shepherd puppy. Using a head collar for English Shepherd training has become standard over the last decade. Training with a head collar does have some unique advantages over the standard training collar. While very simple to use, it is important that head collars are fitted properly and your English Shepherd systematically introduced to the collar. Head collars are typically more simple to use than a typical training collar. Head collars are very powerful when training English Shepherds in tricky situations.
