General Havanese Obedience Tips

Training has to be a positive and rewarding experience for both you and the Havanese. If you are not in the best mood for training, don’t even think of starting. Always commend your Havanese for heeding your orders to the tee! A reward is anything that your Havanese wants and is happy to earn. Food is a great prize but other prizes could be verbalized admiration and toys. Multiple shorter training sessions are typically more effective than one long one. Training mustn’t involve any degrading comments or punishment. There should be no shouting, no hitting or smacking, no leash jerking on choke leashes or collars, and absolutely no electric shocking! Each training session needs to be enjoyable and confidence-building with treats for a job well done.

Training Havaneses with head collars

Yanking the lead is one of the few negative jobs of training a new Havanese puppy. Using a head collar for Havanese training has become very popular in the last few years. Training with a head collar does have some unique advantages over the traditional training collar. Though it’s quite simple to use, it’s vital that head collars are fit properly and your Havanese properly introduced to the collar. Head collars are typically more intuitive to use than a traditional training collar. Head collars are quite effective when guiding Havaneses in tricky situations.
