Buying a Pet Identification Tag for The Norwegian Buhund

How to Pick an ID Tag for Your Norwegian BuhundBuying a pet ID tag for your Norwegian Buhund is like buying insurance – you do so with the hopes that you won’t use it. The “possible price” of not having a pet ID tag is more expensive than the “real price” of purchasing the pet tag itself.

The kind of pet ID tag that you buy is important, so take five minutes or so to think it through. Impulsively buying a collar tag because it’s inexpensive or trendy usually ends up being foolish, long-term.

Consider this prior to buying any pet identification tag for your Norwegian Buhund:
1.What is the amount of risk to your Norwegian Buhund?
Lost Norwegian Buhunds are definitely common – we have all seen “Lost Dog!” signs tacked around town, or deceased dogs lying by the edge of the road. If your Norwegian Buhund is a pro at escaping the fence, or cannot resist chasing a scent, or youthful and spry, or isn’t correctly trained, the possibility of a missing Norwegian Buhund is high.

But losing your Norwegian Buhund isn’t the only possibility.

Sometimes Norwegian Buhunds are stolen. A pet thief may take Fifi or Spot in hopes of getting a reward for its return, or to use in pit fights (even small or gentle dogs are susceptible – they can be used as “bait”), or for use in religious rituals.

And what is the danger to your Norwegian Buhund if something happens to you, its owner?

If you’re a senior citizen with a Norwegian Buhund, particularly if you live by yourself or are in poor health, there’s a good chance that at some point someone else may need to care for your Norwegian Buhund, perhaps with short notice. And anyone can be struck by tragedy or disaster which leaves you unable to care for your Norwegian Buhund.

In this case, will your Norwegian Buhund’s temporary or new caregiver know that Fido hates cats, or needs medicine, or even whether or not Max is housetrained? A pet identification that contains more than your phone number and name would be very helpful.

2.What amount of danger are you ok with?
Some Norwegian Buhunds are just more important to their owners, and the chance of losing that particular animal warrants a specific, higher priced type of pet ID tag. Risk is directly proportional to value.

Note that there is more than one way to determine the value of your Norwegian Buhund. It may be monetary (e.g., a purebred Norwegian Buhund) or occupational (e.g., a guide dog).

But for most Norwegian Buhund owners, the emotional attachment they have with their Norwegian Buhund determines its value. For many people, Norwegian Buhunds are family, dearly loved and impossible to replace.

3.Using your responses to the two previous queries, what do you require of a pet ID tag?

Pet ID tags come in varying materials, shapes and sizes and hold varying amounts of info. Some have artwork or logos, too. Most pet ID tags are meant to be hung from a collar.

At the minimum, a pet ID tag should contain the phone number, name and address of the Norwegian Buhund’s owner in a legible, durable format. Plastic tags are lightweight but chewed easily. Stainless steel tags are durable and don’t rust or fade. These customary kinds of tags can bought from any vet or pet store. They’re economical but the amount of information they hold is limited to the size of the tag.

Luckily, you have many more options for pet identification tags for your Norwegian Buhund these days, such as tattooing, microchipping, digital display tags, voice recorded pet id tags, and pet registry websites.

One of the recent entries in the pet ID market is the high-tech USB drive that hangs off your Norwegian Buhund’s collar (or is attached to their cage) and which holds 64MB of data (including comprehensive medical and diet information). The small USB drive is encased in a sturdy polymer case and can be plugged into any computer, where it is easily updated and easy to print sections for sharing with your animal doctor or pet sitter. There also exist bluetooth trackers, but their range is small, because of bluetooth technological limits.
