To teach your Podenco Canario tricks, even the simple ones, you need to have some small treats, take him to a quiet suitable location and keep the instruction sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the Podenco Canario will begin to get bored. Take note that when he gets something right offer him lots of appreciation and a reward treat, yet beware not to get him overly ecstatic or he might lose focus.
Teach your Podenco Canario to give you his paw
To train your Podenco Canario to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. And then repeat this, and after a few practices don’t take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You need to observe that he is bringing his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then go back to stating it at the same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your response again. After a couple of sessions most Podenco Canarios pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Podenco Canario to give you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a progression of an earlier trick, in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in between your fingers and lift your hand somewhat higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your Podenco Canario will expect you wish to do the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we had trained him earlier. While he rises you state “high 5” and give him the treat. Once your Podenco Canario has actually mastered the paw trick this 1 should be really simple to learn and with only a couple of sessions he will be accomplishing it from your hand signal rather than voice control.
Teach your Podenco Canario to jump through a hoop
Before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop too high as you don’t want your Podenco Canario to injure himself while carrying out the trick. Place your Podenco Canario on one side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a snack in your hand and offer the Podenco Canario the direction to stop sitting. Initially he might try to go around or under the hoop. When this happens begin again. Your Podenco Canario desires the snack and will soon discover that walking around or under doesn’t get it done so he’ll soon start going through it. If he does, state “hoop” and offer him the snack. He’ll soon be jumping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I first began teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and gradually brought it to waist height. In the event that you own a smaller dog you may wish to begin with the hoop on the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and then gradually elevate it more once he gets used to the trick.
I know you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Podenco Canario. Have patience with your Podenco Canario and most of all, have a good time!
