To teach your Papillon tricks, even simple ones, you need to provide some savory treats, take him to a quiet suitable location and manage to keep the coaching sessions to under fifteen minutes or your Papillon will begin to get tired. Take note that when he gets something correct give him lots of praise and a reward snack, just beware not to get him too fired up or he may likely lose focus.
Teach your Papillon to offer you his paw
To train your Papillon to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. Next do it again, and after a few times don’t take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You need to discover that he is bringing his paw up as you state the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the exact same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction again. After just a few sessions most Papillons pick this trick up quite quickly.
Teach your Papillon to give you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of an easier trick, in this case the paw trick. Hold a treat in your two fingers and lift your hand a little higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your Papillon will assume you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we instructed him earlier. Once he rises you state “high five” and give him the snack. As soon as your Papillon has mastered the paw trick this one should be extremely easy to master and with just a couple of sessions he will be doing it on hand signal instead of voice control.
Teach your Papillon to jump through a hoop
Before you start this 1 I would simply like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop higher than necessary as you do not want your Papillon to hurt himself while performing the trick. Set your Papillon on one side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Hold a treat in your hand and offer the Papillon the command to stop sitting. Initially he might try to walk around or underneath the hoop. If this happens begin once again. Your Papillon wants the treat and will soon find out that walking around or below does not get it so he will soon start going through it. Whenever he does, say “hoop” and give him the treat. He will soon be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I began teaching this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and gradually lifted it to waist high. In case you have a smaller dog you might wish to begin with the hoop touching the ground so he just goes through the hoop and then gradually raise it once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I really hope you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Papillon. Have patience with your Papillon and above all, have fun!
