To teach your Old Danish Pointer tricks, even simple ones, you should always have some of his favorite snacks, take him to a quiet suitable location and keep the learning sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the Old Danish Pointer will begin to get bored. Remember when he gets something right offer him great deals of praise and a reward snack, but take care not to get him extra thrilled or he will lose focus.
Teach your Old Danish Pointer to give you his paw
To get your Old Danish Pointer to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a treat. Now repeat this, and after a few tries don’t take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You must discover that he is raising his paw upward as you state the word. If he does not then go back to saying it at the very same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your response again. After two or three sessions most Old Danish Pointers pick this trick up quite quickly.
Teach your Old Danish Pointer to offer you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a continuation of an easier trick, in this case it’s the paw trick. Place a snack in between your two fingers and raise your hand a bit higher than you would raise it for the paw trick. Your Old Danish Pointer will think you want to do the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we trained him earlier. Once he rises you state “high 5” and offer your Old Danish Pointer the snack. When your Old Danish Pointer has mastered the paw trick this 1 will probably be very simple to master and with only a couple of sessions he will be doing it on hand signal instead of your voice.
Teach your Old Danish Pointer to jump through a hoop
Before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop higher than necessary as you do not really want your Old Danish Pointer to harm himself while carrying out the trick. Place your Old Danish Pointer on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a snack in your hand and give the Old Danish Pointer the direction to stop sitting. At first he may try to go around or beneath the hula hoop. If this takes place begin again. Your Old Danish Pointer wants the snack and will soon discover that going around or underneath does not work so he will soon begin going through it. The instant he does, say “hoop” and give him the snack. He’ll quickly be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I first started teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the floor and slowly lifted it to waist high. In case you own a smaller dog you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and after that slowly lift it more as he gets accustomed to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your Old Danish Pointer. Have patience with your Old Danish Pointer and most importantly, have fun!
