To teach your Old Croatian Sighthound tricks, even simple ones, you need to have in hand some of his favorite snacks, go to a quiet suitable location and manage to keep the teaching sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the Old Croatian Sighthound will start to get tired. Take note that when he gets something correct give him lots of appreciation and a reward treat, just be mindful not to get him overly ecstatic or he might possibly lose focus.
Teach your Old Croatian Sighthound to offer you his paw
To teach your Old Croatian Sighthound to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. Now do this again, and after a few practices don’t take his paw so fast. State the word ‘paw’, count to one and only then take it. You must see that he is bringing his paw up as you state the word. If he does not then go back to stating it at the exact same time. Do it a few more times then slow your reaction again. After just a couple of sessions most Old Croatian Sighthounds pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Old Croatian Sighthound to give you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high 5 is a continuation of a simpler trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in between your two fingers and lift your hand just a little higher than you would for the paw trick. Your Old Croatian Sighthound will presume you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab for the treat with his paw as we had trained him previously. While he rises you say “high five” and offer your Old Croatian Sighthound the treat. When your Old Croatian Sighthound has mastered the paw trick this one will probably be very easy to understand and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal instead of vocal commands.
Teach your Old Croatian Sighthound to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop too high up as you don’t really want your Old Croatian Sighthound to hurt himself while carrying out the trick. Set your Old Croatian Sighthound on one side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Hold a snack in your hand and give the Old Croatian Sighthound the command to stop sitting. At first he may attempt to walk around or beneath the hoop. If this takes place begin again. Your Old Croatian Sighthound desires the treat and will soon find out that walking around or under does not work so he’ll quickly begin going through it. When he does, say “hoop” and give him the treat. He will soon be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the ground and gradually increased it to waist height. In the event that you own a smaller dog you might wish to begin with the hoop touching the floor so he just goes through the hoop and then gradually elevate it more as he gets used to the trick.
