To teach your Drentse Patrijshond tricks, even the simple ones, you need to have in hand some small treats, teach him in an obscure suitable location and maintain the training sessions to under fifteen minutes or the Drentse Patrijshond will start to get bored. Take note that when he gets something correct give him lots of appreciation and a reward snack, yet take care not to get him extremely thrilled or he may likely lose concentration.
Teach your Drentse Patrijshond to give you his paw
To teach your Drentse Patrijshond to offer you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. Then do this again, and after a few times do not take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then take it. You should observe that he is bringing his paw upward as you state the word. If he doesn’t then return to stating it at the exact same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction once again. After just a couple of sessions most Drentse Patrijshonds pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your Drentse Patrijshond to offer you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of a more basic trick, in this case it’s the paw trick. Place a treat in your two fingers and lift your hand a little higher than you would for the paw trick. Your Drentse Patrijshond will believe you desire to perform the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we instructed him earlier. As he reaches up you state “high 5” and give him the snack. When your Drentse Patrijshond has mastered the paw trick this one will most likely be very easy to learn and with only a few sessions he will be accomplishing it on hand signal rather than from your voice.
Teach your Drentse Patrijshond to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would simply like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop too high up as you don’t want your Drentse Patrijshond to injure himself while carrying out the trick. Place your Drentse Patrijshond to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a snack in your hand and offer the Drentse Patrijshond the command to stop sitting. At first he might try to go around or underneath the hula hoop. If this takes place start again. Your Drentse Patrijshond desires the snack and will quickly find out that walking around or under doesn’t get it so he will quickly start going through it. As soon as he does, state “hoop” and give him the snack. He’ll soon be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started off teaching this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and gradually increased it to waist high. In case you own a smaller sized dog you might desire to start with the hoop touching the floor so he just goes through the hoop and then gradually lift it more as he gets used to the trick.
I hope you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your Drentse Patrijshond. Have patience with your Drentse Patrijshond and most importantly, have a good time!
