To teach your Chinese Crested Dog tricks, even the simple ones, you should have in hand some of his favorite treats, take him to a remote suitable location and always keep the learning sessions to under fifteen minutes or the Chinese Crested Dog will begin to get tired. Take note that when he gets something right give him lots of appreciation and a reward treat, just beware not to get him excessively ecstatic or he might lose focus.
Teach your Chinese Crested Dog to give you his paw
To teach your Chinese Crested Dog to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. After that repeat this, and after a few successful tries do not take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You must discover that he is bringing his paw upward as you state the word. If he doesn’t then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your response once again. After two or three sessions most Chinese Crested Dogs pick this trick up rather easily.
Teach your Chinese Crested Dog to offer you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a snack in between your fingers and raise your hand just a little higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your Chinese Crested Dog will expect you desire to perform the paw trick and will grab the snack with his paw as we had taught him earlier. While he rises you state “high 5” and give your Chinese Crested Dog the treat. When your Chinese Crested Dog has mastered the paw trick this one will likely be extremely simple to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it from your hand signal rather than from your voice.
Teach your Chinese Crested Dog to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would just like to ask you to be a little practical and not hold the hoop higher than necessary as you do not want your Chinese Crested Dog to hurt himself while carrying out the trick. Place your Chinese Crested Dog to one side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the other side of the hoop. Hold a snack in your hand and offer the Chinese Crested Dog the direction to stop sitting. In the beginning he might attempt to walk around or under the hula hoop. When this occurs begin again. Your Chinese Crested Dog desires the snack and will soon find out that going around or underneath does not get it so he will soon start going through it. As soon as he does, say “hoop” and offer him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I began doing this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the floor and slowly increased it to waist high. On the occasion that you own a smaller dog you may wish to start with the hoop on the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and then gradually lift it more once he gets used to the trick.
I expect you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Chinese Crested Dog. Have patience with your Chinese Crested Dog and above all, have fun!
