Are you aiming to teach your Tornjak to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, though bigger doggies are another story. It is difficult for them to keep their equilibrium.
Teach Your Tornjak to Sit: Prep
Sitting is one of the very first tricks that you should teach to a Tornjak and lays the groundwork for a large number of other skills. To train a Tornjak to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and put the Tornjak on her butt in a corner, to ensure she will not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Tornjak to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words
Protect her from falling to the front by securing your hand beneath her chin and using your second hand dangle the treat above her face. Keep saying clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up too long at one time, but repeat the training often and reward her regularly with a lot of kudos and snacks.
Teach Your Tornjak to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
Throughout her first lesson she will demand quite a bit of help and support from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and is aware of what you want her to do, she’ll rely less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help and support till you’ll simply have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to prevent her from falling forward; later on you will be able to take away the hand entirely and merely suspend the snack just over the height of her head.
Teach Your Tornjak To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time
After steady training she will sit up for a long time after you make her. Then she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Only after she has soaked up this and can keep her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other objects that provide her less and less help and support. At some point she will understand how to sustain her equilibrium and sit up without relying on anything to lean on.
Teach Your Tornjak to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche through persistent repetition. Lastly is the final lesson to teach your Tornjak to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been diligently instructed, you will just have to call her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will do so. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in place.
The only prerequisite for excellence is to train with your Tornjak multiple times a day until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has complied with the order.
Teach Your Tornjak Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Tornjak many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
While training a Tornjak to tolerate being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many things at one time. Try her at first with a cap. Only after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a coat and gradually over time introduce her to more clothes.
