Training Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog To Sit

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to Sit

Are you aiming to teach your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to sit? The technique of sitting up is regularly taught to petite dogs, though much bigger dogs are another story. It’s challenging for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to Sit: Prep

Sitting up is one of the most basic tricks that should be taught to a Shiloh Shepherd Dog and is the foundation for many other skills. To train a Shiloh Shepherd Dog to sit up, put together some snacks as a perk, and put your Shiloh Shepherd Dog on her butt in a corner, so that she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Protect her from falling forward by keeping one hand on her chin and with the second hand dangle the snack above your Shiloh Shepherd Dog’s nose. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the instruction regularly and reward her regularly with a lot of praise and snacks.

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to Sit: Help Her Balance

During the very first lesson she will require quite a bit of assistance from you to stop her from falling forward, but as she gains more control of her balancing muscles and comprehends what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your Shiloh Shepherd Dog less support until you will basically have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her from falling forward; later on you can most likely withdraw this hand and just hold the treat just above the height of your Shiloh Shepherd Dog’s face.

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog To Sit: Remove the Assistance Incrementally

After constant training your Shiloh Shepherd Dog will stay seated for a good while after you make her. Then she should be set up against a wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back. After she has picked up this and can maintain her place effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less aid. Eventually she will learn to maintain her balance and sit up without relying on anything to rest against.

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by persistent repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Shiloh Shepherd Dog to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently trained, you will just have to get her out in the room, show to her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then you'll give her the treat while still in position.

The only criteria for flawlessness is to train with your Shiloh Shepherd Dog several times daily until she can sit up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has followed the order.

Teach Your Shiloh Shepherd Dog Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Shiloh Shepherd Dog many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

While instructing a Shiloh Shepherd Dog to submit to being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many garments at once. Try her at first with a hat. Soon after she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to more clothes.
