Are you struggling to teach your Scottish Terrier to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to compact dogs, however much larger dogs are a different story. It’s tough for them to keep their balance.
Teach Your Scottish Terrier to Sit: Planning
Sitting is one of the fundamental skills that should be taught to your Scottish Terrier and forms the ground work for numerous other tricks. In order to train a Scottish Terrier to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and place the Scottish Terrier on her haunches in a corner, so she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Scottish Terrier to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Prevent her from tilting forward by keeping 1 hand under her chin and using your second hand dangle the reward above the Scottish Terrier’s nose. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson frequently and reward her often with loads of recognition and treats.
Teach Your Scottish Terrier to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout her beginner lesson she will call for significant assistance from you to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of the muscles and sees what you want her to do, she will rely less on your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less assistance till you’ll simply have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be prepared to stop her falling forward; later on you can probably remove your hand entirely and merely suspend the treat right above the level of your Scottish Terrier’s head.
Teach Your Scottish Terrier To Sit: Remove the Aids Eventually
After consistent training your Scottish Terrier will stay seated well after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her help for her back. Once she has understood this and can hold her position effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other items that give her less and less assistance. Gradually she will master how to keep her equilibrium and sit without relying on something to rest against.
Teach Your Scottish Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together
In the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche with the assistance of frequent repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Scottish Terrier to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been properly instructed, you will merely have to call her out into the room, show a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you'll give her the snack while still in place.
The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with her several times a day until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only after she has obeyed the order.
Teach Your Scottish Terrier Other Tricks
You have now the method for teaching your Scottish Terrier many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
While instructing a Scottish Terrier to submit to being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many things at one time. Try at first with a cap. Once she becomes used to that you can put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to more clothes.
