Are you aiming to teach your Saluki to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to petite dogs, but much bigger canines are another story. It’s challenging for them to maintain their balance.
Teach Your Saluki to Sit: Planning
Sitting up is one of the most basic techniques that should be taught to a Saluki and provides the foundation for lots of other skills. In order to train a Saluki to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place the Saluki on her backside in the corner, to ensure she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Saluki to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase
Protect her from pitching forward by securing one hand beneath her chin and with the second hand hold the snack above the Saluki’s face. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at one time, but repeat the training often and reward her often with a lot of cheers and treats.
Teach Your Saluki to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
During the first lesson she will call for a lot of assistance from you to stop her from falling forward, but as she gains better control of her balancing muscles and recognizes what you want, she will count less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Saluki less support up until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; in the future you can most likely remove the hand entirely and simply hold the snack just over the height of her head.
Teach Your Saluki To Sit: Remove the Assistance Slowly
After frequent training she will sit up well after you tell her to. Next she should be set against the wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. Once she has grasped this and can maintain her position effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that give her less and less support. Gradually she will be trained to sustain her stability and sit up without needing something to lean on.
Teach Your Saluki to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by means of frequent repetition. Now comes the final lesson to teach your Saluki to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will only have to summon her out in the room, show a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then give her the treat while still in position.
The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to practice with her multiple times a day until she will sit when told and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only once she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your Saluki Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your Saluki many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
In instructing a Saluki to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments at one time. Try at first with a cap. Only after she gets accustomed to that you can put on a coat and steadily introduce her to the other garments.
Appreciate "teaching your Saluki the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
