Are you attempting to teach your Podenco Canario to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, however much larger doggies are another story. It is difficult for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your Podenco Canario to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the initial skills that you should teach to your Podenco Canario and provides the foundation for a number of other techniques. To train a Podenco Canario to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and set the Podenco Canario on her butt in the corner, to make sure that she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Podenco Canario to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Protect her from falling forward by sticking one hand on her chin and with your other hand hold her snack above her face. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson frequently and reward her frequently with a lot of recognition and snacks.

Teach Your Podenco Canario to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

During her very first lesson she will demand considerable support from you to stop her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and starts to learn what you want, she will rely less upon your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help and support up until you’ll just have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to prevent her falling forward; eventually you can most likely take away this hand entirely and simply hold the reward just over the height of your Podenco Canario’s face.

Teach Your Podenco Canario To Sit: Remove the Help Over Time

With regular training she will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against a wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Soon after she has learned this and can keep her position easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less support. Gradually she will learn to sustain her stability and sit without something to lean against.

Teach Your Podenco Canario to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious through regular repetition. Now here's the final training to teach your Podenco Canario to sit up right after she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been properly instructed, you will merely have to summon her out into the room, display a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you'll give her the treat while still in position.

The only condition for flawlessness is to train with your Podenco Canario multiple times daily until she will sit on command and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Podenco Canario Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Podenco Canario many other skills. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

When training a Podenco Canario to submit to being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many clothes at the same time. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes used to that you could put on a coat and gradually introduce her to more clothes.
