Are you struggling to teach your Plott Hound to sit? The skill of sitting up is quickly taught to little dogs, yet much bigger canines are a different story. It is problematic for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Plott Hound to Sit: Planning
Sitting up is one of the initial techniques that you should teach to your Plott Hound and provides the ground work for myriad other techniques. To train a Plott Hound to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and set your Plott Hound on her haunches in the corner, to ensure she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Plott Hound to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command
Stop her from pitching towards you by holding one hand under her chin and with the other hand hold her reward above the Plott Hound’s nose. Keep repeating distinctly and deliberately, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her frequently with lots of kudos and snacks.
Teach Your Plott Hound to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
In her beginner lesson she will demand quite a bit of help from you to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and understands what you want, she will rely less and less on your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help till you will basically have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to stop her from falling forward; later you can remove the hand and just hold the snack right above the height of your Plott Hound’s face.
Teach Your Plott Hound To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually
With consistent practice your Plott Hound will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. Next she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her a support for her back only. Soon after she has understood this and can hold her place easily, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less help and support. In the end she will figure out how to keep her stability and sit up in the absence of anything to lean on.
Teach Your Plott Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through persistent repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Plott Hound to sit up immediately after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been properly taught, you will merely have to call her out in the room, show a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then just give her the treat while still in place.
The only necessity for excellence is to practice with your Plott Hound multiple times a day until she sits up when told and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only after she has obeyed the order.
Teach Your Plott Hound Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Plott Hound many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
In training a Plott Hound to accept being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things simultaneously. Try at first with just a hat. Once she gets familiar with that you can put on a coat and eventually introduce her to the other clothes.
