Are you aspiring to teach your Leonberger to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to smaller dogs, yet much bigger pet dogs are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Leonberger to Sit: Readiness
Sitting up is one of the fundamental skills that should be taught to your Leonberger and provides the ground work for innumerable other skills. In order to train a Leonberger to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and place the Leonberger on her rump in a corner, to ensure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Leonberger to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words
Protect her from tilting forward by securing one hand beneath her chin and with your other hand dangle the treat above her nose. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit.” Do not make her sit for too long at any one time, but do repeat the instruction often and reward her often with loads of appreciation and treats.
Teach Your Leonberger to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout the very first lesson she will need a lot of assistance from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of her balancing muscles and starts to understand what you want, she’ll rely less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less help til you will merely have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to stop her from falling forward; later on you can remove your hand altogether and just simply suspend the treat just over the level of your Leonberger’s face.
Teach Your Leonberger To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly And Gradually
After regular practice your Leonberger will stay seated for a good while after you make her. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to give her support for her back. Once she has mastered this and can hold her position effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less support. Subsequently she will master how to sustain her balance and sit without needing anything to rest against.
Teach Your Leonberger to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche by regular repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Leonberger to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will only have to summon her out into the room, reveal a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then just give her the reward while still in place.
The only condition for excellence is to practice with her multiple times a day until she sits when told and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the direction.
Teach Your Leonberger Other Tricks
You have now the foundation for teaching your Leonberger many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
While instructing a Leonberger to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many things at the same time. Try at first with a hat. Once she gets accustomed to that you could put on a jacket and little by little introduce her to more clothes.
Enjoy "teaching your Leonberger the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
