Training Your Cane Corso To Sit

Teach Your Cane Corso to Sit

Are you aiming to teach your Cane Corso to sit? The technique of sitting up is effortlessly taught to smaller dogs, but bigger pooches are a different story. It is problematic for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Cane Corso to Sit: Preparation

Sitting is one of the fundamental tricks that should be taught to a Cane Corso and lays the groundwork for various other techniques. In order to train a Cane Corso to sit up, put together some treats as a reward, and put your Cane Corso on her backside in the corner, so that she is not able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Cane Corso to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Prevent her from falling forward by maintaining one hand on her chin and with the second hand hold her reward above your Cane Corso’s nose. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her regularly with a lot of praise and snacks.

Teach Your Cane Corso to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

During the first lesson your Cane Corso will call for a surprising amount of support from you to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she’ll depend less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less assistance until you will only have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be set to prevent her falling forward; later you can probably take away this hand and simply suspend the snack right over the level of your Cane Corso’s head.

Teach Your Cane Corso To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time

With steady training she will sit up long after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Immediately after she has gotten the knack of this and can maintain her posture easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less help and support. Subsequently she will get the hang of how to maintain her stability and sit without relying on anything to rest on.

Teach Your Cane Corso to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by persistent repetition. Now comes the final lesson to teach your Cane Corso to sit up right after she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been properly trained, you will only have to call her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you'll give her the reward while still in position.

The only requirement for perfection is to train with her several times a day until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has complied with the command.

Teach Your Cane Corso Other Tricks

You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Cane Corso many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

In instructing a Cane Corso to tolerate being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many things at the same time. Try at first with a cap. Soon after she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a coat and slowly and gradually introduce her to the other garments.

Delight in "teaching your Cane Corso the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
