Are you struggling to teach your Broholmer to sit? The skill of sitting up is regularly taught to little dogs, but much bigger pooches are another story. It is challenging for them to sustain their balance.
Teach Your Broholmer to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting is one of the initial tricks that you should teach to a Broholmer and forms the foundation for numerous other skills. To train a Broholmer to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and set your Broholmer on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Broholmer to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Prevent her from tilting to the front by keeping 1 hand underneath her chin and using your second hand hold the treat above her face. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at one time, but repeat the lesson often and reward her frequently with loads of approval and snacks.
Teach Your Broholmer to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout her first lesson your Broholmer will require considerable support from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and realises what you want her to do, she’ll depend less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your Broholmer less help and support up until you’ll simply have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be available to stop her falling forward; in the future you can most likely withdraw the hand and just suspend the reward right above the level of your Broholmer’s face.
Teach Your Broholmer To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time
With frequent practice your Broholmer will stay seated long after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. Only after she has picked up this and can maintain her posture effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less assistance. In the end she will be trained to preserve her equilibrium and sit without needing anything to rest against.
Teach Your Broholmer to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious by regular repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Broholmer to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been carefully trained, you will merely have to summon her out in the room, reveal a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then you'll give her the reward while still in position.
The only necessity for perfection is to practice with your Broholmer multiple times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your Broholmer Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Broholmer many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
In instructing a Broholmer to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try her at first with a hat. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and progressively introduce her to more garments.
