Are you making an attempt to teach your Afghan Hound to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to smaller dogs, but larger doggies are a different story. It is challenging for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Afghan Hound to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting is one of the first skills that you should teach to your Afghan Hound and provides the foundation for a lot of other tricks. To train a Afghan Hound to sit up, put together some treats as a reward, and put the Afghan Hound on her backside in the corner, to ensure she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Afghan Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words
Keep her from tilting forward by keeping 1 hand beneath her chin and with your other hand dangle her snack above her face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson often and reward her often with lots of appreciation and snacks.
Teach Your Afghan Hound to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
In the very first lesson she will demand a lot of support from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the muscles and knows what you want her to do, she will count less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give your Afghan Hound less help and support till you’ll just have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to prevent her from falling forward; in the future you will be able to remove the hand entirely and merely dangle the snack right over the height of your Afghan Hound’s head.
Teach Your Afghan Hound To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time
After steady training she will stay seated well after you make her. The next step is she should be set against your wall, so as to provide her help for her back only. Soon after she has figured out this and can hold her position easily, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less help. Gradually she will learn how to sustain her stability and sit in the absence of something to rest on.
Teach Your Afghan Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together
In the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind with the assistance of frequent repetition. Now here's the final training to teach your Afghan Hound to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been carefully instructed, you will just have to get her out into the room, show her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the treat while still in position.
The only criteria for perfection is to rehearse with your Afghan Hound several times a day until she will sit when told and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only once she has followed the direction.
Teach Your Afghan Hound Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Afghan Hound many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
While training a Afghan Hound to accept being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many garments at the same time. Try at first with a hat. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and slowly introduce her to the other clothing.
Enjoy "teaching your Afghan Hound the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
