We all imagine training the perfect Talbot, a puppy that is a CGC or canine good citizen and is well mannered and responsible at all times. Well dreams do come true if the training is done with kindness and dedication. Keep in mind pups learn from day one and want to be informed what is right, what is not, and appropriate socialization.
Pups are just like small children, they need to get regular guidance and teaching. Training a pup needn’t be a chore, all you have to think about are a few straightforward rules:
Ten Tips For Training Your Talbot
- Until your pup is trained, you want to keep an eye on him at all times. If you can not then you ought to crate her. Create a routine for the pup, that will serve to help him to settle very quickly. The plan has to incorporate things like hourly potty visits, feeding times, break periods, walks, play time, teaching, and so forth. A pup that has a hectic day has no time to be bored or misbehave.

- Show the significance of “No,” from the first day. Do not endorse actions like jumping, mouthing, tug-o-war, barking, or running out of open gates and doorways. Compliment great behavior and just ignore or walk away when there is bad behavior. The pup will learn that if he acts up he will lose his companion/playmate.
- To deal with a habit you must catch the Talbot in the process and surprise her by rattling a canister of stones. Once you have done this help him adjust his behavior and instantly give him a treat and approval. Talbots do not call to mind what happened prior so reprimanding him after an occurrence is of no use.
- Be sure to call/use his name favorably. Don’t say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will induce mental confusion and the Talbot will think that if you call his name then it is for something bad. The pup needs to relate his name with pleasant events like hugs, petting, walks, snacks, and such. If this happens he will respond willingly whenever you call his name.
- Establish a teaching schedule that is short and sweet, say 10 minutes thrice a day. Prolonged repeated lessons can be dull and the Talbot will lose interest in learning. Help make lessons interesting and use trick training to teach directions like sit, down, come and more.
- Bond with the Talbot and both of you will certainly enjoy your lessons. The pup needs to wait to hanging out with you and not avoid you by turning tail or hiding. Make sure to socialize the pup early. Socialization is one of the most essential lessons. The Talbot should learn to coexist around other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. So, slowly but surely introduce the doggie when he is small to regular activities and noises. Take him to the mall/ park, introduce him to kids and other pets, and make him unfrightened of the vacuum and water hose.
- Understand everything about cage training, leash walking, house breaking, along with food training. These are kindergarten lessons that every Talbot puppy needs to grasp. Learn about all the traits as well as qualities of the breed. This will give you useful ideas on how to effectively instruct the dog.

Training a Talbot has many levels: kindergarten, behavior training, doggy sports, showing and conformation, along with other facets like therapy dogs, hearing dogs, etc. What degree you choose to instruct hinges on you together with the learning abilities of your Talbot.
