All of us hope for training the perfect Mountain Cur, a puppy that is a CGC or canine good citizen and is very well mannered and trustworthy at all times. Well dreams really do come true when the instruction is performed with kindness and dedication. Don’t forget pups learn from the first day and want to be advised what is correct, what is not, and correct interpersonal skills.
Puppies are like children, they really need frequent guidance and instruction. Training a pup needn’t be a nightmare, all you want to consider are a few simple principles:
10 Tips For Training Your Mountain Cur
- Until your pup is trained, you have to keep an eye on her at all times. Whenever you can’t then you need to cage her. Design a routine for the pup, this will enable her to settle very quickly. The calendar should consist of things like hourly bathroom breaks, feeding times, break times, walks, play time, education, etc. A pup that has a busy day has no time at all to be unoccupied and get into mischief.
- Teach the pup to heed you. Mountain Curs stay in packs and naturally follow a leader. If you establish your leadership in no uncertain terms then instructing will get easy because the pup will heed orders at all times and not challenge your authority.
- Utilize exclusively positive training strategies. Do not ever yell at, smack, or abuse your Mountain Cur. It is not just harsh but can induce behavioral problems. Use of electrical shocks, prong collars, sprays, and so forth may hurt the animal.
- Show the pup “absolutely nothing in this life is free.” This is a method of teaching that is universally acknowledged as a reliable teaching tool. When you practice this, the pup will discover that to experience something like love, a walk, or snack, he has to act properly.
- Present the meaning of “No,” from day one. Do not advocate actions like jumping, growling, tug-o-war, barking, or running out of open gates and doorways. Commend courtesy and disregard or walk away when there is bad conduct. The pup will certainly learn that if he acts up he will lose his companion/playmate.
- To improve a habit you have to witness the Mountain Cur in the act and startle him by shaking a canister of stones. When you have done this make him remedy his behavior and promptly give him a snack and appreciation. Mountain Curs do not think of what happened prior so reprimanding him after an occurrence is useless.
- Be sure to call/use his name positively. Don’t say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will induce mental confusion and the Mountain Cur will think that if you call his name then it is for something negative. The doggie needs to identify his name with pleasant times like hugs, petting, strolls, treats, and such. If this happens he will respond happily the second you call his name.
- Make a teaching routine that is short and sweet, about 10 minutes three times a day. Prolonged repeated lessons can be monotonous and the Mountain Cur will lose interest in the learning session. Make learning fun-filled and use trick training sessions to teach orders like sit, down, come et cetera.
- Connect with the Mountain Cur and both of you will definitely like your sessions. The pup should eagerly anticipate spending time with you and not avoid you by breaking away or taking cover. Be sure to socialize the dog very early. Socialization is among the most crucial teachings. The Mountain Cur must definitely master how to exist with other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. And so, slowly introduce the puppy when he is small to common activities and sounds. Take him to the mall/ park, introduce him to kids and other animals, and make him unafraid of the vacuum and garden hose.
- Study everything about potty training, leash walking, house breaking, and also food training. These are kindergarten lessons that every Mountain Cur puppy must grasp. Know about all the characteristics and qualities of the breed. This will give you valuable ideas on how to effectively coach the puppy.
