Tips For Training Your Large Munsterlander To Sit

Teach Your Large Munsterlander to Sit

Are you working to teach your Large Munsterlander to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to very small dogs, though bigger dogs are another story. It is challenging for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Large Munsterlander to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the most basic techniques that should be taught to a Large Munsterlander and provides the ground work for many other tricks. To train a Large Munsterlander to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and place your Large Munsterlander on her backside in the corner, to make sure that she won’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Large Munsterlander to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase

Keep her from tilting towards you by keeping your hand on her chin and with the other hand hold her reward above the Large Munsterlander’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit for too long at one time, however repeat the instruction regularly and reward her often with loads of cheers and snacks.

Teach Your Large Munsterlander to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

Throughout the 1st lesson she will require quite a bit of help and support from you to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gains better control of the muscles and is aware of what you want her to do, she will depend less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less help up until you will merely have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to prevent her from falling forward; later you may withdraw the hand and just simply hold the reward just above the level of her head.

Teach Your Large Munsterlander To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually

With constant training your Large Munsterlander will stay seated for a long time after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against a wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back only. When she has taken in this and can keep her posture easily, rehearse with her up against chair legs, cushions or other items that provide her less and less aid. In the end she will be trained to preserve her stability and sit up without anything to rest on.

Teach Your Large Munsterlander to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind through constant repetition. Last here's the final training to teach your Large Munsterlander to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will merely have to get her out in the room, show to her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then give her the reward while still in position.

The only criteria for flawlessness is to train with your Large Munsterlander several times daily until she can sit up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has followed the command.

Teach Your Large Munsterlander Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Large Munsterlander many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

In training a Large Munsterlander to submit to being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things at one time. Try at first with just a hat. After she becomes accustomed to that you could put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to more garments.
