Are you aspiring to teach your German Pinscher to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to very small dogs, yet bigger pet dogs are a different story. It’s problematic for them to keep their balance.
Teach Your German Pinscher to Sit: Prep
Sitting up is one of the first skills that should be taught to a German Pinscher and lays the ground work for innumerable other skills. To train a German Pinscher to sit up, put together some snacks as a perk, and put your German Pinscher on her butt in the corner, so she is unable to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your German Pinscher to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words
Keep her from tilting to the front by maintaining one hand on her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above her nose. Keep repeating deliberately and clearly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her regularly with a lot of approval and treats.
Teach Your German Pinscher to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
In her initial lesson she will demand significant help from you to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of her balancing muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she will rely less and less on your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less assistance until you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to stop her falling forward; later you can probably take away the hand completely and merely hold the treat right over the level of her face.
Teach Your German Pinscher To Sit: Remove the Help Eventually
After regular training she will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her help for her back. After she has soaked up this and can keep her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less help. Subsequently she will understand how to preserve her balance and sit up without relying on something to rest on.
Teach Your German Pinscher to Sit: Putting It All Together
During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind with the assistance of persistent repetition. Lastly comes the final training to teach your German Pinscher to sit up right after she hears the phrase. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will just have to get her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the snack while still in position.
The only prerequisite for perfection is to train with her multiple times a day until she can sit on command and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your German Pinscher Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your German Pinscher many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
When training a German Pinscher to submit to being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many things simultaneously. Try her at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes used to that you can put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to more clothing.
Enjoy "teaching your German Pinscher the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
