Tips For Training Your French Brittany To Sit

Teach Your French Brittany to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your French Brittany to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to petite dogs, however larger canines are another story. It is problematic for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your French Brittany to Sit: Prep work

Sitting up is one of the first tricks that you should teach to your French Brittany and provides the foundation for several other tricks. To train a French Brittany to sit up, put together some snacks as a perk, and place your French Brittany on her butt in a corner, to ensure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your French Brittany to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Stop her from pitching to the front by keeping one hand underneath her chin and with the other hand dangle the treat above her face. Keep saying distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at any one time, but repeat the instruction often and reward her often with loads of praise and treats.

Teach Your French Brittany to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During her very first lesson your French Brittany will need significant assistance from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and makes sense of what you want her to do, she’ll rely less and less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your French Brittany less support until you’ll simply have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be in place to stop her from falling forward; eventually you can withdraw your hand altogether and just hold the snack right above the height of your French Brittany’s face.

Teach Your French Brittany To Sit: Remove the Assistance Slowly

After frequent training she will stay seated long after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her support for her back. Once she has understood this and can keep her posture effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other items that offer her less and less aid. Gradually she will understand how to preserve her balance and sit without relying on anything to lean on.

Teach Your French Brittany to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious by frequent repetition. Now is the final training to teach your French Brittany to sit up immediately after she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been properly taught, you will simply have to call her out into the room, reveal to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will do so. Then give her the snack while still in place.

The only necessity for perfection is to train with her several times a day until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has followed the command.

Teach Your French Brittany Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your French Brittany many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

While training a French Brittany to accept being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try her at first with just a cap. After she gets used to that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to more garments.
