Tips For Training Your Drever To Sit

Teach Your Drever to Sit

Are you aiming to teach your Drever to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to small dogs, though much larger pooches are another story. It is problematic for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your Drever to Sit: Anticipation

Sitting up is one of the 1st techniques that you should teach to a Drever and is the foundation for numerous other techniques. To train a Drever to sit up, prep some treats as a perk, and place the Drever on her rump in the corner, to ensure she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Drever to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command

Keep her from tilting towards you by maintaining your hand under her chin and using your other hand dangle the snack above your Drever’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at any one time, but repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with loads of appreciation and snacks.

Teach Your Drever to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her first lesson your Drever will demand a surprising amount of help and support from your hand to stop her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and learns what you want, she’ll depend less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your Drever less help and support til you’ll simply have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to prevent her falling forward; eventually you will be able to take away the hand altogether and simply hold the treat just over the level of her head.

Teach Your Drever To Sit: Remove the Help Incrementally

With constant practice she will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. The next step is she should be set against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Soon after she has learned this and can hold her place effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other objects that offer her less and less support. Ultimately she will figure out how to sustain her balance and sit up without relying on anything to lean on.

Teach Your Drever to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche by constant repetition. Last is the final lesson to teach your Drever to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. Chances are, if she has been properly taught, you will just have to get her out into the room, show her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you give her the treat while still in position.

The only requirement for flawlessness is to practice with her several times daily until she can sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has followed the order.

Teach Your Drever Other Tricks

You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Drever many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

In teaching a Drever to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes simultaneously. Try at first with just a cap. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you could put on a jacket and eventually introduce her to the other clothing.

Get a kick out of "teaching your Drever the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
