Tips For Training Your Barbet To Sit

Teach Your Barbet to Sit

Are you attempting to teach your Barbet to sit? The skill of sitting up is effortlessly taught to very small dogs, though bigger pooches are another story. It is tricky for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Barbet to Sit: Readiness

Sitting up is one of the fundamental skills that you should teach to your Barbet and provides the ground work for many other tricks. To train a Barbet to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and put the Barbet on her butt in a corner, to ensure that she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Barbet to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command

Prevent her from tilting to the front by sticking your hand under her chin and using the other hand hold her treat above your Barbet’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with lots of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Barbet to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her very first lesson your Barbet will call for considerable help and support from you to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gets more control of her balancing muscles and realises what you want, she’ll rely less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance up until you’ll simply have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her falling forward; later on you can probably take away this hand altogether and just simply dangle the snack right above the level of your Barbet’s face.

Teach Your Barbet To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually

With frequent training your Barbet will stay seated for a good while after you make her. Next she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. Soon after she has gotten the knack of this and can maintain her position easily, practice with her against chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less support. Ultimately she will master how to maintain her equilibrium and sit up without relying on something to rest against.

Teach Your Barbet to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious by means of constant repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Barbet to sit up right after she hears the words. Most likely, if she has been carefully instructed, you will only have to summon her out into the room, show a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will do so. Then give her the reward while still in position.

The only condition for perfection is to practice with your Barbet multiple times daily until she can sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Barbet Other Tricks

You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Barbet many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

When teaching a Barbet to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many clothes simultaneously. Try at first with just a cap. After she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to more clothing.
