Tips For Teaching Your Tosa To Sit

Teach Your Tosa to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Tosa to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to smaller dogs, though bigger doggies are another story. It is problematic for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Tosa to Sit: Preparing

Sitting up is one of the most basic skills that should be taught to your Tosa and forms the foundation for countless other skills. To train a Tosa to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and place your Tosa on her backside in the corner, to ensure she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Tosa to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Keep her from pitching towards you by sticking your hand on her chin and with your second hand hold her treat above her nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up too long at one time, however repeat the training routinely and reward her frequently with a lot of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Tosa to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

During the very first lesson she will call for a surprising amount of help from your hand to stop her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the stabilizing muscles and recognizes what you want her to do, she’ll count less upon your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less support up until you’ll merely have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be ready to prevent her from falling forward; in the future you will be able to remove the hand and merely hold the treat right above the height of her face.

Teach Your Tosa To Sit: Remove the Aids Slowly And Gradually

After constant practice your Tosa will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Only after she has figured out this and can maintain her place easily, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less assistance. Subsequently she will get the hang of how to keep her equilibrium and sit up without relying on something to rest on.

Teach Your Tosa to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious through persistent repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Tosa to sit up as quickly as she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will merely have to summon her out in the room, reveal a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then just give her the reward while still in place.

The only condition for perfection is to train with her several times a day until she can sit when told and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has followed the direction.

Teach Your Tosa Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Tosa many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in rhythm with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

In instructing a Tosa to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many items at one time. Try at first with just a hat. Only after she gets familiar with that you could put on a jacket and progressively introduce her to more clothes.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Tosa the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
